Government calls on community groups to help reduce deficit

Bookmark and Share

This week is your last chance to participate in a consultation being run by the cabinet Office and the minister for Civic Society on how voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations can help reduce the government defict by contributing ideas on how government services can be delivered more efficiently.

The government recognises that organisations in the sector have a wealth of experience from delivering services on the frontline, often in the most disadvantaged areas. Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude and Civil Society minister Nick Hurd wrote an open letter at the end of July asking these organisations to contribute their ideas.

The Christian Church taken as a whole is the largest civil society group in the UK. Ideas and examples can be posted on the Cabinet Office website or e-mailed directly to sectorchallenge@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk.

Minister for Civil Society, Nick Hurd, said:

“The voluntary, community and social enterprise sector do really important and much valued work on the front line delivering services and that is why they are best placed to identify what the state does well and what could be improved. On my visits to organisations many people working in the sector have already shared with me their ideas and now I’m opening up the challenge to the whole sector.”

If you or your church are already involved in this way, it would be great to highlight the fact by posting a response. If you would like to know more about voluntary and community work, why not download the SUSA guide to getting involved here.
