The Big Society In Context
Download
Since the idea was first suggested by Conservative leader David Cameron, there has been considerable interest among Christians as to what the 'Big Society' will mean in practise. In this report for the Jubilee Centre, Dr Guy Brandon looks at the theology of state and society, the practical realities, and tackles questions like:
- Should government power and responsibility really be passed to local communities, families and individuals?
- Do local communities etc. have the capacity and willingness to take on additional power and responsibility?
- Is a bigger society necessarily a better thing? And what might a bigger and better society look like?
He concludes that if the initiative is to succeed, Christians and Churches will have to play a central role. They should judge the initiative based on the 'ends' and not just the 'means', and Government for its part must remove the barriers to Christian involvement caused by bureaucracy and political correctness.
