Although somewhat rare, Britain has a long tradition of candidates standing as independents (not tied to any of the main parties). As well as the occasional high profile independent MP, there are numbers of local councillors who have been elected based on their profile in the community or their identification with a particular issue.
This brief guide explains what you need to do to stand as an independent, and the basic rules that you must follow to register as a candidate and fight an election campaign.
